Gitcoin Builder //
Onboarding web3 project builders.

Context

Gitcoin Builder is a platform built on top of a set of Ethereum smart contracts that allow web3 builders to get their projects funded. It’s like Kickstarter, but for web3.

There are two separate steps involved for builders to get their projects funded:

  1. Setting up a project: this lets potential funders know what their projects is about and more.
  2. Applying for funding: through regular funding rounds, project builders can apply for funding for their projects.

Research

Through user interviews with project builders and behaviour data from Google Analytics, we found that it wasn’t obvious to users that getting their projects funded from start to finish involves two steps, and a single-digit percentage of them didn’t make it to the second step.

Problem

How might we help project builders get through the two-step round application process easily?

Solution

We prototyped various solutions, and we landed on building an onboarding checklist that follows users throughout their journey, and gets out of the way once they’ve reached their goals.

An improved Builder homepage, that shows users what they need to do to get started on their journey.

After successfully finishing your first step and getting their projects created, the onboarding checklist reminds users to apply to a funding round.

Once they’ve finished their application, the onboarding checklist morphs into a view that shows them the statuses of their applications in a glance.
